Meditation To Release The Fear Of Death

Are you very self critical?
Do you find that you put yourself down a lot?
Do you often compare yourself to others and find that you are lacking?

YOU are unique divine creation. YOU are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars and YOU have a right to be here.

In your essence you are as perfect and individual as a snowflake. No two are alike yet each is flawless and immaculate.


And yet it takes great courage just to be yourself. To be who you are. Why? Because you ARE different!

Everywhere we go there is a constant barrage of messages, to conform, to buy, to behave in a certain way, to have a certain image.

There is manipulation on the internet, TV and in the media. There is pressure from your friends, your parents, your school, your community, your religion.

Governments spread fear. They want you to step in line. They don’t like you asking embarrassing questions about their abysmal corruption. They LOVE nice compliant taxpayers, workers and soldiers.

Everywhere there is fear. Try these ones on for size:

  • The earth’s ecosystems are being dismantled.
  • The economy is imploding.
  • We have an encroaching police state.
  • There is an increasing threat of all out thermo-nuclear war.
  • How about this one, a monster asteroid will hit the earth and wipe out humanity.
  • Failing that a virus or new antibiotic resistant bacteria will finish us off.

I’m not saying that these events are not a reality or a possibility.

The times they are a changin’ and everybody is uncomfortable and afraid.

The thing is, when you are in fear you lose your connection to spirit. When you are in fear you become easy to control.

Start using your AWARENESS. Instead of going into fear ask yourself “What does my awareness tell me?”

How can you develop your awareness? One way is through the practice of meditation. In a way you could say that meditation is subversive. Yes, subversive, because you start to tune in to your soul and you start becoming immune to lies, manipulation and fear.

The greatest fear of all is the fear of death. If you have released the fear of death then can you truly be free. How is that? Because then you have no agenda. Then you can be fearlessly loving, fearlessly compassionate and fearlessly forgiving.

When I was a young man I met this guy, Yogi Bhajan.

He literally saved my life. At the time I was willing to try things that would take me to the edge of death.

His greatest gift to me was in inspiring me to keep to a spiritual discipline. It’s called a sadhana and everyday for the past 40 years I’ve been getting up early in the morning. I take a cold shower and I meditate on what Native Americans call the GREAT MYSTERY. I love that expression.

Yogi Bhajan once said something very interesting. He said prayer is when you talk to God. Meditation is when God talks to you. Interesting.

So I practiced and practiced and I can tell you sometimes beings come to me in my meditation. Early one morning awhile ago a being came to me. I realized this was my spiritual guide, my guru. This being was Guru Ram Das and I was given a meditation to release the fear of death. I’ll share it with you.

Meditation To Release The Fear Of Death

First of all. I’m not here to personally supervise you so I need you to listen up. What follows is a yogic deep breathing meditation. IF YOU HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION OF ANY KIND PLEASE SEEK THE ADVICE OF YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE PROCEEDING. If at any time during the breathing you feel dizzy, STOP. In the beginning only practice this meditation for short periods until you are comfortable with it. Then and only then can you increase the time.

Do this meditation on an empty stomach. Wait at least 2 1/2 hours after eating before starting. My favourite time to practice it is in the early morning when I get up.

Sit in any comfortable sitting position with your spine straight. I like to sit in easy pose with my legs crossed and with a cushion under my butt. See the demonstration photo of me sitting at the end of this post. Cover the shoulders and spine to keep them warm by wrapping yourself in a shawl or blanket.

The mudra or hand position is the fingers are interlaced with the left  thumb on top.

The tip of the tongue touches the roof of the mouth, the palate. This stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete. The eyes are closed but focused at at the centre of the brow at the third eye point.

The mind follows the breath and in this meditation the breath will slow down to about 1 1/2 times per minute. This slow deep breathing  will stimulate both the pineal and pituitary glands.

The mantra is Guru Guru Wahe Guru Guru Ram Das Guru. Watch the video so you can pronounce it correctly. For those who know how to read Gurmukhi script:


I’ll break it down for the meaning.

GURU – The syllable GU means shadows or darkness. RU is the one who disperses them, so GURU is the power that disperses darkness.
WAHE – This is an expression of wonder and admiration. It is like a cosmic WOW!
RAM – means Lord or Spirit.
DAS – is servant or one who is has attuned to his master.

So technically the mantra can be translated as, “Wise Wise Is The One Who Is Attuned To The Lord”, however words don’t really convey it’s essence. It is a mantra of ecstasy and you will only understand it through the experience of it.

Silently repeat each word of the mantra with each beat of the heart. Again watch the video. The heart becomes a kind of drum which reverberates the sounds, Guru Guru Wahe Guru Guru Ram Das Guru.

FEEL the heart vibrate it and the brain will entrain to the beat of the heart.

The meditation is in four parts. Let’s say you have allotted 20 minutes.

1. Inhale deeply. As you slowly fill the lungs vibrate the mantra, each word with one beat of the heart. That makes 8 heartbeats. At the end of one repetition the lungs should be full. Now start exhaling, again repeating the mantra with the heartbeat. Continue this for a total of 5 minutes. (NOTE: As you practice this meditation your lung capacity will increase and you can do a number of repetitions of the mantra as you inhale and exhale. Remember, the pineal gland is stimulated as you slow the breath down.)

2. Inhale deeply vibrating the mantra with the heartbeat until the lungs are full. Now hold the breath for one repetition of the mantra. Exhale deeply for one repetition of the mantra. Now hold the breath out for one repetition of the mantra. Continue 10 minutes. (NOTE: Again as you practice your lung capacity will increase and you can hold your breath in or out for as many repetitions of the mantra as is comfortable.)

3. Exactly the same as part one. Continue this for a total of 5 minutes.

4. Sit in complete silence and listen to the echo of the heart. Continue as long as you like.

One more thing. There are yogic locks which need to be used during the meditation. These  locks open the central channel called the Shushmana and allow the pineal gland to radiate.

ROOT LOCK is also known as Mul Bhand. Root lock is applied when the breath is held in and when it is held out. To do this:

  1. Pull up and hold on anal sphincter muscles.
  2. Pull up and hold on sexual organ.
  3. Pull lightly in on naval point towards the spine.

DIAPHRAGM LOCK is also known as Uddiyana Bandh. Diaphragm lock can only be practiced when the stomach is empty and is applied only when the breath is held out. To do this:

  1. Inhale deeply and exhale completely. Hold the breath out.
  2. Pull your entire abdominal region, especially the area above your belly button, back toward your spine.
  3. Keep your chest lifted and do not allow your chest to collapse downward.
  4. Press the lower thoracic spine forward gently.
  5. Keep the lift strongly applied, without straining.
  6. Release the lock by relaxing your abdomen and gradually inhaling.


Diaphragm Lock

NECK LOCK is also known as Jalandhar Bandh. It is the simplest of the locks and is applied throughout the meditation. To do this:

  1. Sit comfortably with a straight spine.
  2. Lift your chest and sternum upward.
  3. Stretch the back of your neck gently straight by pulling the chin toward the back of the neck.
  4. Keep your head level and centred without tilting forward or to either side.

PRACTICE EVERY DAY. I like to do this meditation for 2 hours at a time.
