Most people would say that the person below is meditating
and that the individual below is not.
Actually we could say that both are in a state of meditation.
Modern quantum physics says that a fundamental property of the universe is the Wave – Particle Duality.
Light can behave like a particle of matter and we call it a photon. Light can also can behave purely as a non physical wave. Similarly molecules of matter can behave both as a wave or as a particle.
As human beings we too have this dual aspect. We have a physical body and yet we are also beings of light. It is all a very mysterious paradox.
Look at the Yin-Yang symbol of Taoism.
The circle represents unity, the whole. It is divided into two halves. One side is the male active principle and the other, the feminine reflective principle.
The Yin Yang can also be a representation of the path of meditation. The active yang part is the taking care of daily life, things like working, shopping and cooking. The reflective yin part is the sitting in stillness and the experience of pure consciousness; what we would normally call meditation.
Both aspects, the yang and the yin aspects of meditation are required. You act and experience being in the physical world, then in stillness you reflect on your action and learn from your behaviour.
This process goes on repeating and repeating. You act again, then reflect again on your actions and so on.
In this manner WISDOM is acquired.
We can see then that the so called “non sitting-in-meditation” part of the process, that active yang part of our daily life is crucial.
And thus what becomes essential to the process of meditation is your CAPACITY to behave as a compassionate human being in your daily life. What is vital is an ability
- to love & to be accepting
- to live with humility & gratitude
- to be non judgemental
- to be able to laugh at yourself
- to practice non attachment
- to allow others differing points of view
- to have patience
Some people are very damaged and this process of healing will take its own time and proceed in its own way.
